While MPs spend this week gearing up to debate the Government’s Climate Change Bill, 22 schools from Northern Ireland will be commencing a month activities aimed at coming up with their own plans for saving the planet, to coincide with Friends of the Earth’s ‘Shout about climate solutions‘ (5-9 Nov) week.

The Probation Board for Northern Ireland wishes to make grants in 2008/09 to the voluntary and community sectors to fund services for offenders.
Playground Partnerships is financed by Woolworths and its Kids First charity and is inviting potential applicants to register an interest in applying to the scheme when the application packs are published in March 2008.

The WEA recently held two very successful media training days for voluntary and community groups across Northern Ireland. The training was part of the Creating Change Programme which aims to support groups to work together across the sectarian divide and lead positive change in their areas.

NICVA’s seminar on Collaboration & Mergers was a great success with those who attended on the 25 October. The aim of this morning session was to equip those organisations embarking on a merger or collaboration, with the “need to know” elements of these type of ventures.

The UPC have just released their training calendar. A range of courses are on offer including Community Publicity Skills, Developing Facilitation Skills, Introduction to Community Development, Race & Ethnicity and Women & Leadership (details on the attached document).

The NØW Project, helping individuals with learning disabilities to access and keep employment, has, for the second year running, scooped three awards at the prestigious National Training Award Event. Winning awards at Regional and National level NOW were also presented with the Special Category Award for Diversity and Social Inclusion, sponsored by 'Skills for Business'

An arts based regeneration programme developed by the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) in partnership with Strabane District Council has won a prestigious National Training Award at gala ceremony in Belfast.

Community Direct, a social economy enterprise, based in Belfast, has won a much coveted National Training Award. The award, which recognises outstanding achievement and success through training and development was presented at a gala ceremony in the Culloden Hotel, on 16 October.

Budding young entrepreneurs sampled a taste of life as potential kings and queens of the turntable and gained some first-hand experience of what it is like to run a business, during an impact day with Kevin Traynor of Belfast based Sonic Academy, part of Business Boot Camp, a new and innovative business start programme.

Applications are being sought for European Social Funding under Priority 1 of the new Northern Ireland European Social Fund Programme 2007-13. There will be £45.5million of funding available under the first call of the NI European Social Fund. (Please note this scheme does not open until 11 October 2007)

The radically revamped and updated website of the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) launches on Monday 1 October has a host of new features that users will appreciate.
If you are interested in taking part in the Leonardo, Grundtvig or Transversal programmes, there is an Information Day in NICVA on Friday 12 October 2007 registration beginning at 9.45am.

The development of a National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is currently underway in the Republic of Ireland. The National Steering Committee on Education for Sustainable Development has appointed ECO-UNESCO as consultants for the development of the National Strategy.

The WEA (Workers’ Educational Association) is winning the fight against gremlins through their Essential Skills courses. 1 in 4 adults in Northern Ireland have problems with reading, writing and maths. One learner who has overcome these problems with the WEA is Rab Robinson.
