Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey visited city centre restaurant Dr. B’s Kitchen to discuss the difficulties that young people with a disability face when it comes to making the ‘transition’ from school to work.

About Dr. B's Kitchen

Dr. B’s Kitchen is a Barnardo’s Northern Ireland project for young people with learning disabilities, providing training and work experience in the hospitality industry.

Training begins on site within the realistic working environment of our city centre restaurant and conference facilities. It is funded by Barnardo’s and the European Social Fund.

Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey has visited city centre restaurant Dr. B’s Kitchen run by children’s charity Barnardo’s Northern Ireland.

After being shown round the restaurant, which prepares young people with learning disabilities for a career in the hospitality industry, Sir Reg had lunch with a group of young disabled people from the Armagh area.

The young people were drawn from the Disabled Children and Young People’s Participation Project. This project works with disabled young people aged 4-25 years and encourages and enables their participation in planning services in the Southern Board area. It is funded by Barnardo’s and Wraparound (SHSSB).

They were there to discuss the difficulties that young people like themselves face when it comes to making the ‘transition’ from school to work.

Speaking after the hour long meeting Sir Reg said:

"My department strives to help people find and retain suitable work, whatever their background or ability. I have been impressed by the training I have seen here a today and wish the students every success."

Lynda Wilson, Director of Barnardo’s Northern Ireland added:

"Our experience working with young disabled people is that they find it difficult to access the training and employment that they need and we are glad that the Minister listened positively to the young people here today."
