What do a Brent Goose, a photographic collection, a rural graveyard, your granny’s stories and the river lagan all have in common? They have all been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund through its small grant schemes Your Heritage and Young Roots.

boy in the mirrorThe Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust ran an education programme and events to celebrate the arrival of the Brent Geese to Northern Ireland.

Glenravel Local History Group and St Peter’s Cathedral Community Services pulled together photographic exhibitions about their local areas.

Irvinestown cleaned up their graveyard and have created a site of local historic interest and of gentle tranquillity.

The Glens of Antrim Historical society collected stories from older members of the community to celebrate the traditions of the past and the Beechmount Community Project are currently working their way down the Lagan exploring and learning about the natural environment, archaeological remains and industrial past of the river Lagan.

And you thought HLF was just about old buildings.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has helped communities across Northern Ireland to explore, discover and share their local heritage. HLF’s small grant programmes are open for applications all year round and we are always seeking applications from community, voluntary and youth groups. We run two small grant schemes Your Heritage and Young Roots.

The Your Heritage programme awards grants from £5,000 to £50,000 and projects should also increase opportunities for learning about heritage and open up heritage resources and sites to the widest possible audiences.

Young Roots aims to fund projects which involve young people in heritage (Aged between 13 and 20 or up to 25 for those with special needs). Grants are available of £5,000 to £25,000.

To qualify for a Heritage Lottery grants you just need to show how your project:

  • Encourages communities to identify, look after and celebrate their heritage or
  • How it conserves and enhances our diverse heritage

The HLF team are always available to talk to groups about their projects or to offer advice on making an application. They run twice monthly advice surgeries in the Belfast office for groups to come in and talk about their project face to face. If you can’t make it to Belfast the team can usually make alternative arrangements. For more information about HLF, projects they have funded and their grant programmes go to www.hlf.org.uk
